Is there a way to use the visual proxy (when it is not the master) in an external program?

I'm thinking primarily of video files. I've had to rotate some files that were oriented incorrectly (the image maker started in portrait and then completed most of file in landscape so I needed to rotate to landscape) the rotated file is the version. In the version stack I would like the version to be used when I click <CRTL> enter to play in external program, VLC media player.

Why not just use the version then with Alt+Enter to open it?
If you first need to "find" the version, use the Version Panel to have it on screen always, even if not in the current scope.

That's fine I can do as you suggest. I had checked the help file and was wondering if I was missing something.
