Group files in file window by file name

When I display files in the file window with the "List" layout, I get all files displayed in list format as expected.
Is it possible to group this list by parts of the file name, e.g. the first 5 characters?
I just want to get a list of the different file names.

No.

You can create a data-driven category based on the first n characters of the file name. This will do what you want easily.
You can e.g. create child categories based on the first n characters of the file name.
