Import of additional images

Hallo Mario

I wanted to add 134 NEF files to my database. All these NEF files are stored in a new folder ( F:\2023\2023-06-15\) on my harddrive. Instead of importing these 134 files, IMatch updated the Metadata of 4'052 files (see attached screenshot). During this process, the computer responded very sluggish to all commands. The 3918 additional files were already included in the database. This does not correspond to the expected behaviour, where I would expect only to import these 134 files.

Once the import is finally done, not all thumbnails are shown (see second screenshot). In some cases, only the Nikon Capture sign is shown. Upon clicking on the sign, the image will be shown, but not as thumbnail. My expected behaviour of IMatch is, that all thumbnails are shown. The files previously imported are all shown perfectly.

I have to stress that I reinstalled IMatch 2023 on the PC and got the same results.

When IMatch rescans a folder, it checks for new and updated images. And when found, adds them to the background processing queue. You did not include the IMatch log file produced during that session (see log file) so there is not much information for me to work with.

If IMatch only shows the icon of the associated application, it was unable to extract a thumbnail.
This problem can be caused by many things:

1. WIC codec does not support the particular RAW variant
Run a WIC Diagnostics for the affected NEF file and attach the result. This shows which WIC codec is installed, what it returns for the file etc.

2. The WIC codec has crashed while processing files.
This happens occasionally with the old FastzPictureViewer codecs.
See 1. for more info

3. System overload.
What kind of PC are you using? Desktop? Workstation? Notebook?
IMatch processes many files in parallel to improve performance. Sometimes this "overloads" notebooks and causes strange errors.

In that case it helps to reduce the number of operations IMatch runs in parallel: See Process Control (Advanced Setting)

Select the failed NEF files in a File Window and press <Shift>+<Ctrl>+<F5>. In the dialog select "Force Update".
This causes IMatch to re-import the files.

Please find attached the WIC Diagnostics File. All images were taken with a Nikon D500 camera. According to my understanding, the thumbnails should have been created. The suggested Force Update worked for all files.

I am using a Desktop station and so far I never had any issues with the overload.

Probably, I will upload another series of files tomorrow and we will see how this goes. I will keep you posted.

Only the standard WIC codecs installed. Both WIC and LibRaw support the format in use.
Since no log file is available, we cannot check for warnings reported by IMatch or WIC or Windows while processing the files.
May be an overload, a WIC codec running into trouble, impossible to say.

If you can reproduce this with another set of files, try to switch to LibRaw by enabling the "photools.com RAW processing" under Edit > Preferences > Application. Make a copy of the log file (Help menu > Support), ZIP and attach it here.

Then select the  same files again and force an update as I've explained above.
If this problem is caused by the Microsoft WIC codec, switching to LibRaw should solve it.

Hello Mario

I had to reinstall Nikon MX Studio to solve the problem.

Actually, I also reduce the number of operations IMatch runs in parallel as you adviced in your initial response.

Regards,
Christoph

Mario

i have no idea what Nikon MX Studio does or what it changes on your system.
Does it install a WIC codec?

I was never fazed by software produced by Nikon or OEM products sailing under the Nikon brand, so I cannot really offer advice.
The Nikon WIC codec was always good, though.
