Thumbs of DNG files of version 1.7 do not show on win 10 and Imatch

When assembling a panorama file with Adobe camera raw it produces a dng file
for which there is no codec in win 10. A Google search does not yield any info about this.

I just found a (GERMAN) blog entry explaining the advantages of the new dng-panorama files:
https://www.docma.info/blog/adobe-raw-panoramen-und-die-neue-leichtigkeit

The newest dng converter can handle these files and convert them to an older dng standard version.

Anyone else encountered this problem? Anyone who knows more about this?
Can someone try this on WIN11?

I provide such a problem file here:

Doesn't work for me on Win 11.

I understand that Adobe, again, has changed or enhanced the DNG format to support a feature in one of their applications.

When I look at your image with the IMatch WIC diagnosis I see:

Windows WIC:

Thumbnail: Codec ''
(CreateDecoderFromFilename failed (88982F60 The image is unrecognized.).) 0x0 pixel in 0 ms.
 Preview: Codec ''
(CreateDecoderFromFilename failed (88982F60 The image is unrecognized.).) 0x0 pixel in 0 ms.
 Full resolution: Codec ''
(CreateDecoderFromFilename failed (88982F60 The image is unrecognized.).) 0x0 pixel in 0 ms.

LibRaw:

Analyzing image 'E:\data\download\community\13791\2023-11-11 003-Pano.dng'
Error opening file: -2 (Unsupported file format or not RAW file)

So, neither the DNG codecs integrated in Windows nor LibRaw support your new fancy DNG variant yet.
You will have to wait until (and if) Microsoft and the LibRaw project run by a volunteer catch up with the changes Adobe has done to DNG this time. So much for a "standard" format.

Or, Adobe, as a billion dollar company, could spend a couple of thousand dollars to provide a DNG WIC codec that handles all their DNG variants? They did once, in the past. But then stopped. Probably with the same reason they closed the formerly open PSD format with version 6 and stopped documenting it...it's all about customer retention and lock-in.

QuoteThe newest dng converter can handle these files and convert them to an older dng standard version.
That should solve your problem then?

I know, Mario, that you are not a friend of DNG - but look at it this way: It is at least documented and in the
public domain. Here is what I found on the Adobe website:
QuoteDNG 1.7.0.0 Specification (June 2023)
Download the specification, which describes a nonproprietary file format for storing camera raw files that can be used by a wide range of hardware and software vendors.

DNG SDK
The DNG SDK provides support for reading and writing DNG files as well as for converting DNG data to a format that is easily displayed or processed by imaging applications. This SDK can serve as a starting point for the addition of DNG support to existing applications that use and manipulate images or as an aid to the inclusion of DNG support within cameras.
Download the Adobe DNG SDK
Question: is there any other RAW file format which is documented?

QuoteI know, Mario, that you are not a friend of DNG
Wrong. I'm a big fan of DNG.
I'm just no fan of the fact that Adobe makes changes to DNG whenever they need it for one of their applications and then all other vendors, Microsoft, the LibRaw project etc. have to catch up - which can take a long time.
And I won't go the road to implement full DNG support manually in IMatch. Way to much work and future maintenance debt in my opinion. The specification alone has over 120 pages now! The DNG SDK depends on third party software like libjpg, expat, zlib, libjxl and the Adobe XMP SDK...

QuoteQuestion: is there any other RAW file format which is documented?
Nope.

If you have to use the latest features of DNG, stick to Adobe software for so long, use the DNG Converter to convert it into a support DNG variant or wait until Microsoft and LibRaw support it.

At least FastRawViewer (latest 2.0.8 Beta) can display the small embedded thumbnail and/or the "raw".
Didn't check the current libraw status.

No wonder, as Fastrawviewer comes from the same people as libraw.

I have the same issue, but mitigated as I now only stitch HDR panoramas in AdobeRAW. Normal panos and HDRs, I stitch in Capture One which is now my main raw converter. But it doesn't do HDR panos yet.
My solution is to save the Adobe generated DNG also as a Tiff file and usually disgard the DNG after that. The Tiff gives me all I need.

Mario

The latest official release of LibRaw does not yet support his particular DNG variant.
Please understand that I won't include beta versions in production software.
