When I'm in the file window and try to enter a "open bracket --> (" in the search bar  it will not be inserted. Also I'm missing the red cross at the right hand side of the search bar (se both screenshots)

This is only the case when experimental features are enabled. In the normal mode, all works fine.

The red X has been replaced by the magnifier icon at the same place. Same functionality.
I'll look for the reason why you cannot enter an (.

Found it. ( has the same "key code" as <Cursor Down> and this is a special key (together with CTRL) for auto-completion edit controls in ribbons. <Ctrl>+<Cursor Down> opens the history list. I've just forgot to let the edit control process the ( key otherwise.

Fixed for the next release.

Aahh.

Found the functionality of the magnifier icon. Indeed it works as described by you, but think that is rather counter intuitive. Clicking on a magnifier normally enlarges something or starts a "find action"). For instance: the magnifier icon in the map panel starts a search.

Since the button gives access to search functions and modes, the magnifier icon seems suitable.

Since it also cancels an active search as a secondary function (without emptying the search bar) I could maybe change the  icon to an X in that case? The button changes (showing a red X overlay) while a search is running. You won't see this unless you're searching large file sets since the search is very fast.

I've pondered several scenarios but finally settled to the simple two icon (normal and search running). Simple is better I think.
