Issue with the filter manager

Since some weeks I have a slight problem with Filters. When I enable a stored filter (such as a certain file extension) in the filter manager by checking the corresponding filter box, it works perfect and I can see the requested pictures, but when I then uncheck the corresponding filter box the filter stays active, i.e. I still see the result of the filter output instead of seeing all files again and despite the "No filters active"-message in the filter manager. It seems as if the remaining pictures, which should show up after the "unchecking", are kind of hidden. I can get them "back" by clicking on the Show/Hide Stacked Files icon but not by unchecking the box.
I have gone through the help docs and through Preferences but could not find a solution. I guess somewhere a box is checked (or unchecked) but where? Your help is appreciated.
