hello.

As written in the title i am in the trial mode but i have begun to work on my keywords hierarchy that was very messy...
The first think i do not understand : why when i categorize a file with for example animals/birds/swan , the upper categories animals/birds and animals are not automatically assigned to the file as well ? is there something i have missed or do you think it is useless ?
The second is : when i worked with the categories panel it was "jumping" very often, making the click and paste very hard to use. is there an option to make this more stable (suspending back work maybe?) .
At least i did not find any automatic tagging : for example would it possible that the soft recognize humans or birds by itself ?
Thank you for your responses.

Are we taking about IMatch categories or keywords?

IMatch categories are hierarchical. By definition, each parent category (virtually) contains the files in it's child categories, recursively. When you assign a file to the swan category, it will show when you click on birds and also in animals. You always assign files to the leaf level (lowest level).

You say categories but you also say "assigned to the files as well". Do you mean keywords?

When you assign a file to the hierarchical keyword animals|swan|birds, the file receives the keyword "animals|swan|birds". IMatch does not assign keywords "animals" and "swan|birds", since this would be redundant and would create kinda mess with your keywords.

If you really, really need something like this, you can also assign the "animals" and "swan|birds" keywords, but that's not what hierarchical keywords are made for.

When IMatch flattens your hierarchical keywords into non-hierarchical XMP:subject and optionally legacy IPTC:Keywords, you can control if IMatch writes he hierarchy, only the leaf level or if it brakes up the hierarchical keyword into all its levels. See Write hierarchical keywords for details.
This depends on what your client or stock photo agency requires and the other software you use in your workflow.

What exactly did you do in the categories panel? I assume you assigned files to categories? Which categories? @Keywords? What did you have selected in the File Window at the time?

Note that when you change what you see in the File window (e.g. looking at category A and assigning or removing files from A at the same time), the File Window will update to reflect your changes. And if this changes the focused file to change, the Category Panel will change what is visible to show the categories of the new focused file, if you have enabled the corresponding option in the Categories Panel (Follow Selection).

See https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?msg=100388 for a apparently related question and how to deal with this.

See The IMatch AutoTagger for related information. I assume with "soft" you mean IMatch.
