Can Category Formulas Reference Attributes?

Can one create formula driven categories from Attributes?

It appears this cannot be done.

In my case, I would like to identify files for which various attributes have not been applied.  I know I can do this on a case-by-case basis with filters, but a quick glance/selection from nested calculated categories would be much easier.

Data-driven categories currently work with metadata only.
