How to migrate your categories from IMatch 3 to IMatch 5
« on: June 25, 2013, 07:45:32 am »
IMatch 5 can import IMatch 3 category schemata files. If you want to migrate your categories, this is how you do it:

In IMatch 3, go to Database menu >  Import & Export > Export Category Definitions. Set the settings in the dialog as follows to export all categories with file assignments to a schema file:

Note: The export file name is just a sample. Choose a file name and folder of your liking.

Next, switch to IMatch 5 and make sure the Import & Export Panel is visible. Either press <F9> followed by <X> or choose View menu > Panels > Import & Export. In this panel, click on the Run button for the Category Import module:

Click on the ... button to open the file name browser dialog:

and in the dialog choose IMatch 3.x Schema as the import format, and the select the file you have exported in IMatch 3:

IMatch 5 will now import your category schema. If you have the same files indexed in your IMatch 5 database which you have in your IMatch 3 database, IMatch 5 will also restore the file assignments. If you work with copies of your files (e.g. during the IMatch 5 Beta test) or the files have been moved to another location, choose the Map files using their check-sum option.

See the corresponding help topic for full details.

Please do not post questions in the FAQ board. This board is for postings and articles which explain specific features of IMatch or give specific tips for other users.
I will move your post to General.

Is that your question? You try to export categories from IMatch 3 and IMatch 3 shows you this message?
Check that the output folder and file name you choose is valid and that you can write to that folder.
Attach the IMatch 3 log file (see http://www.photools.com/1161/imatch3-logfile/) so we see error messages or warnings IMatch 3 has created.

Note: Usually you run the IMatch 5 database converter to convert your entire IMatch 3 database, including the categories, into the format used by IMatch 5. Did you already do that? Or do you have specific reasons to manually export and import your categories?

"Note: Usually you run the IMatch 5 database converter to convert your entire IMatch 3 database, including the categories, into the format used by IMatch 5" I'm going to run the database converter.

Hi, Carl

I'm still interested in the error message you get when you try to export your categories in IMatch 3. This should just work. The error message you are seeing indicates that the folder or file name you have chosen for the export is causing trouble. Did you try to export into another folder or to the desktop?

I think I found what the problem was. There was no C:\TEMP folder. After I created a folder and made sure I could write to it I didn't get any more ERRORS.

Ah, good. That's what I guessed at in my first reply.
