What would be the best method for me to use to restrict my database scope such that only files for which the tag "Exif::Main\270\ImageDescription\0" is occupied be enumerated in the file window?  Also, if I've already defined a custom thumbnail layout purposed just for images that have image descriptions, how can I sort primarily on the image descriptions (my choice of ascending or descending) by default and automatically from within that layout itself, without having to define such criteria in the Sort drop down (trying to cut back on clutter)?

To restrict the scope:

Filter Panel
.  Value filter
  -  Files with Value (radio button)
  -  Select the Exif Description field using the tag selector (button next to the drop down)

If you want to sort by this field, you create a sort profile in preferences, and then activate it using the drop-down list of sort profiles on the toolbar above the thumbs.

Both of these are very well described in the help file.  I suggest you read it.
