I am having trouble understanding the various selection modes for files showing in the file window.
Please could someone explain selected, focused, selected/focused.

Say you select 5 files in the file window.  5 will be selected but only one can have the focus.  And if you had nothing selected at all before you made your selection of 5 files you could end up with 5 files selected but none focused.  On my system the focused file has a yellow border around it (see screen shot).

Usually the focused file is also selected (unless the user explicitly un-selects it using <Ctrl>, for whatever reason).

The focused file is used for certain operations, e.g. to determine on which file the Viewer starts if you open it with a multi-file selection, or for the Metadata and Keyword Panel to tell which metadata is a "multiple selection".
