new files - metadata template vs. copied metadata

I have noticed that if I send a raw file to the batch processor and create a version (metadata preset set to copy xmp wo-CR, and all IPTC), The metadata that the version receives after ingest is that assigned by the metadata template I have set up to be applied at ingest (via Preferences), not the metadata of the master version (assuming the two differ)

I want the metadata template to be applied to new original files, but not new versions.   What is the best solution?
