Exif tag USER COMMENT overwritten by IM with DESCRIPTION field - Cosher?

I just noticed that the EXIF field User comment (which I set in my camera) is overwritten
by IM with the content of the Description field. Is this supposed to be?
It in effect wipes out the data written there by the camera.

I suppose it should leave it alone if it is not empty.

Which description field? EXIF? IPTC? XMP?

The user comment and the description field are mapped to the same XMP tag by the MWG rules, if this is what you mean.

You changed the XMP description of a file in the Metadata Panel?
This does not change any other metadata tag.

Did you write-back the file? If you did this, IMatch maps (via ExifTool) the XMP description to all corresponding EXIF/IPTC tags, as defined by the Metadata Working Group:

Exif ImageDescription (270, 0x010E) / EXIF user comment
IPTC Caption (IIM 2:120, 0x0278)
XMP (dc:description["x-default"])

1) Write text in 'Description'
    'Benutzerkommentar' is blank

2) Click on 'Änderung speichern'

3)  'Benutzerkommentar' like 'Description'

As said, the XMP description tag (the one you change) is mapped into EXIF and IPTC data on write-back.
