Thumbnail Toolstips

First of all Happy New Year to all!
I see that Mario didn't take a long break, he must have worked hard to get 5.3.2 out over the holiday season  :D.

I have been trying out the new thumbnail tooltips. In the initial poll I thought it would not be useful; I now see how it will become an invaluable tool  8) !

Question:
In Preferences, Applications, Tooltips I have been playing with "size option". On switching between options small, medium large, I do not see any change in the size of the thumb. What do I need to do to get larger thumb?

BTW the small thums are fine when investigating what is in a folder, hower when looking at versions I will be using larger tooltips.

Thanks,
Aubrey.

That's what I expected. Many users will really come to like this.

I have switched thumbnail sizes between small and very large (the maximum size is limited by the size of thumbnails you have in your DB) and it works here.

My thumbnail size is set to 300.
Thumbnail size in the File window can be increased or decreased with the slider. (I expect that the file window uses the thumbnail in the db?)

Mario, what size thumbnail did you use in your DB?

Thanks,
Aubrey.

Mario

300.
Thumbnail tooltips go from 60 (small) to 120 pixel (Extra large).

Will there be any downside (performance hit?) to using the larger tooltip thumb sizes?

Mario

Nope. IMatch loads the thumbnails from the database and scales them down to the size you have configured. The file window works the same way. Both use a shared internal in-memory thumbnail cache which keeps up performance when the database is remote.

Made comparisons... its working fine. There is a small change between different sizes. I am using "Extra Large". I would like thumbnail to be even bigger!

Possibility of user defined size in next version?

Aubrey.

I thought 120 was already quite large. This is not supposed to replace the version or stack panels...
How large is your monitor, which resolution do you use, how many pixels?
I can change this easily, it's in a configuration file. Let's see if other users have thoughts on this.
I think I'll add a XXL (160 pixel) and XXXL (200 pixel) for the next version.

Monitor is 1600x1200 resolution DELL ULTRASHARP 2001FP

I like the XXL and XXXL great to see how it will be
Thanks,
Aubrey.

Extra Large is still small for me too.
Could the largest be determined by the screen size or max thumbnail size: fill the screen with the display?
(since, as Mario mentioned, there would be no significant performance hit due to size.)

I wasn't a part of the earlier discussion - but I like the tooltips!  I'm on a 30" monitor at 2560x1600. Some larger options would be of interest here.

I am disappointed that the tips don't seem to work for offline media (I have 114,000 files). Thumbs already exist in the database that could be used as a tip source (I think).

Mario

The tooltips are created from the tooltips stored in the database. I think the problem you have is that IMatch displays another tooltip for off-line media and hence does not shot the thumbnail tips. That's by design.

I have changed this to allow between 60 and 300 pixels for the 5.3.4 release. If the thumbnail size in the database is < 300 pixel, that will limit the upper size. This should no do nicely even for users who already run 4K monitors.

IMatch now shows thumbnail tooltips also for off-line folders - it displays the off-line info now as a footer, below the tooltips.

I love this new feature  ;D
The bigger the better; so i am looking forward to the next version.

Another possible improvement would be to get some kind of visual contrast to the background, so that the tooltip becomes even better visible.
-> e.g. big dark border; darkening of the background, etc.
