Stack problem

One of the stacks I created refuses to open or expand.  The top photo is visible, and when the cursor is over the stack icon the thumbnails show up for the 5 other photos in the stack.  However, the number of photos in the stack is shown as zero, and the stack seems to respond to no commands.  I hope I have not lost the stacked photos.  Have I?

Open the Stack Panel. Select one of the files in the stack and make it the top.
Does this solve the problem?

Thanks.  At first, and through many tries, the stack wouldn't open.  And then it did.  Don't know why.
