Wrong Lens-ID/Info in composite ID-Objektiv

I just bought Sigma 180 f 2.8 Makro (I already love it after just 30 images...). My problem is, that the objektiv-ID is wrong (IMatch Objektiv-ID   Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM | A).

What cause the problem?

  • Canon 5D III
  • Sigma
  • Capture One (I read it from the card with C1)
  • Exiftool?

Ferdinand

The problem is that none of the lens manufacturers put the full lens description in the maker notes, only a code that must be decoded.  As as I understand it, the independents like Sigma and Tokina are the worst as their codes are really ambiguous and sometimes not unique.  That said, it's harder for them as they don't know what the OEM makers have done.

As this information is provided to IMatch by ExifTool, you're probably better off asking this question on the ExifTool forum.  Then Phil will probably tell you what a struggle it is to decode these lens codes.

Hi Ferdinand. Thank you for your advice; this I will do.

Mario

I have nothing to add to Ferdinand's comment. It's precise.
Lens ids are often ambiguous, not standardized, may be reused for a different lens, etc.
Phil has written a lot about this.

No sorry. For an A+ I would have expected a table of commented links to the various comments on Phil on lens ids and their special problems  :D :D :D :)

Wow. Phil works fast too. :-) Will be solved with Exiftool 9.85.

Compared to Phil and  Mario, most developers are just half fast, at best.

I can add some new information, although it amounts to underpin the messages above.

A Sigma 150-600 DG OS HSM (Sports version) lens mounted on a Canon 5D MkIII has a "Lens ID" as a Contemporary version. At the same time: "Lens type" reads as Canon 100-400 mm

When I attach a 1.4 convertor to this Sigma lens, "Lens type" reads as Canon 100-400 + 1.4x; "lens ID" is identical to "lens type", but "Lens" reads as 210.0 - 840.0 mm.

Any news on this item of lens identification and "the like"?

Mario

Mees, you are posting to a thread from February...the problem was solved with ExifTool 9.85 and now we use version 10 already.

There is no standard as how to identify lenses. Each camera vendor uses its own system, and often the lens ids are re-used for other lenses, or lens data is even encrypted or intentionally obfuscated.

If ExifTool has problems identifying your lens, please contact Phil via the ExifTool user forum (http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/exiftool/forum/) and describe your gear and provide a sample image for Phil to look at. If possible he will add support for your specific lens in one of the following ExifTool versions.

Aahh, was not aware the problem was solved (because that obviously is not the case for this specific lens).

I'll get in contact with Phil to ask for help/assistence.
