Canon metadata tag "MacroMagnification"

Hello

Canon has the excellent macro lens Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x. When you use this lens Canon records the macro magification in the metadata (embedded metadata) in the tag Canon/MacroMagnification. However this tag is not transferred to the xmp sidecar. Is this a result from Exiftool not moving it to xmp, or is there something I can do to make it appear in the xmp?

I doubt that this is a standard XMP tag and has a mapping defined by the MWG. Not all EXIF data, and especially not those thousands of proprietary and vendor-specific maker notes has mappings in XMP.

1.  Can you see the tag data in IMatch when you switch the Metadata Panel to Browser mode?

2.  If not, go to Edit > Preferences > Metadata 2 > Tag Manager and enable the Canon maker notes which contain this tag. Since there are more than 1000 Canon maker notes in various groups, you need to check for yourself. Tip: Run the ExifTool Command Processor on one of your files, with the "List Metadata" tag. This shows you the tag group and tag name you need to enable in the Tag Manager.

Then select your files, press Shift+Ctrl+F5 and use the "Rescan Metadata" option. This reloads all data with the new Tag Manager settings, importing the maker notes into your database.

3. I don't know why you want to have the data of this tag copied into the XMP record, but if you really need that, use a Metadata Template to copy it into one of the freely usable XMP tags like "Description" or "Title" or something.

1 - I cant see the tag in Browser mode.

2 - In ExiftoolGUI I find this tag under the group "Canon". The same I see when I use ExifTool command prosessor in IMatch ([Canon] Macro Magnification : 5.0x), but when I go to Tag manager I cant find this under the group "Canon" (the attatched screenshot is what I see in the tag manager in IMatch). I can find a MacroMagnification in some camera model specific groups, but not "Canon" and not in my camera model (5DmkIII).

3 - This tag is really useful for those who photograph a lot with this lens. This gives you the magnification used for each photo so that you dont need to write this down during each photoshoot. Remember that this lens works between 1-5 times magnification.

Sorry, can't help you with that. I would need a sample file so I can look at the group which ExifTool places it in. And then tell you the Tag Manager group.

I have looked at the Canon tags in the Tag Manager. The "Macro Magnification" is listed under the first Canon:FileInfo group.
If you enable this group and refresh the metadata (Shift+Ctrl+F5 in the File Window) the data will be important.

Looking at the Tag Manager, I find it frightening how much stuff Canon is putting in files, but apparently always in different spots. I don't know how Phil keeps up with all this nonsense. Why Canon nut just produces a proper XMP record in their fancy cameras and gets rid of all the past millenium EXIF maker note stuff is still a riddle to me...


Tip: Easy to find: Enable all Canon groups, reload the metadata panel, then search in the Browser layout for the data. Right-click > Copy as Variable. This shows the tag group and tag name.

IMatch uses the localized (translated) group names as delivered by ExifTool. I don't make them up myself.
