I was asked if it is possible with Imatch to create something like a catalog containing works of art.
In a first step the catalog will contain about 3000 mostly colored etchings.
Questions:
1) Are there any special metadata schemes for this kind of problem? or special thesaurus?
2) or will attributes be the better solution
3) What is the best practice to set up a testing and developement environment without messing up my production database (and environment)

1. Not that I'm aware of.
For a thesaurus, maybe start at the Getty: http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/

2. If you want to embed the information in the image, use XMP metadata.

3. Use a Test database. See also the corresponding notes in the IMatch help.

Nice to see that the Getty is so active in establishing Linked Open Data. Open standards are a benefit to (almost) everyone.
