Okay, so I recorded an mp4 file, from which I have made a number of png screenshots, for which the filename is somewhat similar to the original video file.  How can I make sure that certain metadata fields of the derived files are the same as those of the original?  This means being able to choose exactly which metadata fields are always synchronized (changes in the original files are reflected in their derivatives).

There is no standard for metadata in video files. MP4i is just a container format, it can contain one or more video streams in different formats. This all depends on the producing device and your video editing workflow. This also has an impact on the metadata available in your files and whether or not ExifTool can extract it.

PNG files may contain an embedded XMP record, plus some file-format specific metadata.

Setup a file version rule with metadata propagation and see how far you get.
IMatch will maintain an XMP record for your video file, which you can propagate to your PNG files using versioning.

If you plan to copy individual metadata fields from your video file or to do things not covered by the automatic metadata propagation in IMatch, using ExifTool on the command line is probably the best way. Copying metadata (except XMP) from a video container file format to an image is a bit unusual.
