Discard metadata before write back

I have applied the GPS based location template and I thought that only the geoencode would be filled in and not also the GPS position. I tried to do undo, but it didn't work well.
I have also tried to make a rescan of those files, but it still asks me to write back.

What is the best method to discard changes and not apply to files?
I've seen this https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=8388.0, but according to Mario's answer it's not a good idea ..

1. Use Edit > Undo to immediately undo your changes.
or
2. In the Metadata Panel, click the pen icon in front of the metadata tags which you want to mark as "unchanged"
or
3. Select the file, press Shift+Ctrl+F5 and pick "Reload Metadata". Before, check that the metadata protection features are off under Edit > Preferences > Metadata 2.
