Changing workspace - not keeping current directory

When I save a workspace, it appears to save the current directory position as well. So later on, when I am in a different subdirectory and want to change the view, I select the saved workspace but it then changes back to the directory I was in when I last saved. How can I keep the current subdirectory when I change to a different workspace?

I guess you mean the workspace maintains and restores the currently selected folder in the file window in the Media & Folders View?
This is how workspaces work. When storing the tree state (which folders are open/collapsed and in which state), the currently selected folder is also stored. Only that way the entire view state can later be safely restored when you switch to another workspace.

This has been a request before (to offer an option to keep the directory fixed and not part of the workspace).  Not sure if this is a feature request for this particular option - but it was discussed here: https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=9501.msg67295#msg67295
