Title: Question about "Assign location based on GPS data in file"
Post by: mopperle on January 18, 2022, 01:10:27 PM
I'm trying to use the mentioned template to fill "Location" in the metadata. But although there are coordinates and the location is shown correct in the map, nothing is filled. Am I missing something or did I misunderstood the purpose of this template and how it works?

Double-check the coordinates you have entered for the location, the area settings etc.
You show a screen shot of the map panel, which does not help.
It would be more useful to see how you have configured the MD template (or, even better, attach it below) and the settings for the location you want to apply via the template.

There are different meanings of the term "location". The Metadata Template you mention assigns one of the named Locations (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#panel_geo.htm?dl=h-41) you have defined beforehand in the Map Panel. Your screenshot shows the location marker of the file, but I can not see a marker for a named Location. This would be a red circled icon like in my screenshot. A Location in this sense is a kind of placeholder which can combine coordinates, address data, and a name.

What Locations Do (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#geo_locations.htm)

That seems to be the problem. I misunderstood in this case the template. "Location based on GPS data in file" meant for me that it would find at least country code/country and state.
But instead it looks for a "handmade" location matching/close to the GPS data, correct?

See Locations (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#md_templates.htm?dl=h-7) in the Metadata Template help.

The idea is that you setup frequently used locations in the Map Panel. You can then show them there, assign the location coordinates and data to files, and use them in MD Templates for the same purpose.
This feature existed before IMatch had built-in reverse geocoding. And it's still very useful, because your manual input may be more precise than cloud-based reverse geocoding, and its free.

If you want to use reverse geocoding in IMatch (finding country, city, location etc. for GPS data), please see the corresponding help topic: Reverse Geocoding (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#tools_revgeocoding.htm) and Geo & Maps (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#rmh_config_geo.htm) for setting things up and adding your account info.

Usually it is instant. Check your SPAM folder.

If you are using gmail.com, please note that Google deletes more and more emails not from one of their "ad partners" or "customers" or white-listed host lists. Without notifying you about that.
This community also suddenly has issues sending mails to people using gmail, and there is no way to contact Google or ask them to whitelist, as far as I know.
On the other hand, 90% of the SPAM bot registrations here in the community come from gmail addresses.

Ok, got it meanwhile and also tried Google (with API key). But for 9 out of 10 attempts, i get this message (geonames and Google):

The log file will contain more info, e.g. the error message returned by the service.

Have you enabled your GeoNames.org account. That is a second step, often overlooked.

Yes, meanwhile it works. Obviously it took a while to come alive.
