Title: Cache location?
Post by: stefanjan2 on February 06, 2025, 05:38:44 PM
I am installing a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro m.2 in a Generation 3 slot on my motherboard which I will be using as a C: drive for Windows, apps and probably imatch database.

I also have a 500mb Samsung Evo 970 m.2 in a generation 2 slot.

A couple of questions:

1. Would the imatch cache be better on the C: drive or the slower 500mb cache or does it matter.

2. Is it OK to store RAW image files on the Samsung 990 Pro or would it be better to store on an internal Samsung SSD 870 2.5 inch drive?

I doubt you will notice much of a difference. Loading cache files or images is mostly a "streaming" operation.
You will notice better speed over a spinning disk, but I doubt you will notice much of a difference between different SSD generations for this type of usage.

Database on the fastest SSD, though. Because IMatch does millions of random accesses over the database file.
