Title: I really miss the 3.6 search tool

I'm somewhat confused by the new search setup... The main search bar seems limited to only those searches that appear on the dropdown.

Mostly I miss the filename search, and really miss the regular expression option.

Is that functionality still present somewhere?  And is the best way to find a file by name, to use the the find bar in files screen and type in all or parts of the name.  That somehow seems messy in that you get the displayed file plus a screen full of closed directories.

Try the File Name Filter, also has Regular Expressions.
