Title: [ALREADY IMPLEMENTED] Left Panel Text should be database related.
Post by: Aubrey on July 08, 2014, 03:12:44 PM
The left panel text (see ProjectName.jpg) should be database related rather than user related.
For example - I use IMatch for my photography, I also use IMatch as a database for petroleum projects I am working: these projects have pdf, Excel, DOC files. I might be working different countries and each project will be separate.

When I have a database open it would be nice to see immediately if it is for a Russian Project, Middle East project etc. (It's also nice to see the photography project, but I have to admit this is pretty obvious as there are only photos to be seen!

Mario's comment (https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=2788.0)
These settings are saved per user. The assumption is that you always use the same studio logo or text.
This is no bug. It's by design.

Please comment and or vote if you think this would be better than the current set up... otherwise it remains at the bottom of Mario's enhancement list!

Aubrey.

I agree the ID plate has little use, at least for me, that's why I have mine disabled.
I would suggest adding an option per database to use the extra space in the title bar (screen shot).

I am not sure what either of you are shooting for. If you create a new database and name it using "Russian Project" you can tell at a glance what database you have open. See my screen shot of my IMatch TEST Database.

I agree with Richard.

I look at that space as a branding or marketing tool for professional photographers who might want to show off their capabilities or show their product to clients.  As an amateur, I don't use it.  The window title is enough to see my DB file name.

Thanks for the input from others.

If you want to show database or other data in the ID plate, just don't use a fixed bitmap. Use text and variables.

For example, if you wan to to show the name of the current database in the ID plate, use this:

This gives you

Almost everything is possible with IMatch. Cool!

Great suggestion, Markus!  This should be all that's needed for those using multiple IM databases.  For NOW at least, I'm employing just one IM database, which comprises various projects I'm working on.  Is it really better to maintain completely separate databases for those with multiple (and generally distinct or separate) projects?  I'm curious about what experienced IM users would consider to be a "best practice" in this regard . . .

There are many ways to structure and organize multiple project databases. Maintaining separate databases can cause a lot of extra effort, maybe requires manually moving database-specific templates or settings between databases. It's basically a PITA and should be considered only for extremely huge collections or when you run under specific security requirements.

Often users later try to somehow merge their separate databases, with all the problems and manual work involved. Always consider twice before working with multiple databases (test databases excluded).

Thanks for the advice on multiple projects, Mario.  And I see (now!) that you, rather than Markus, originally pointed out the way to use the Left Panel Text area for the database name, so THANKS again, for that!  ::)

Yep, Tom, flowers to Mario, not for me!  ;D
