Title: some files won't index file window images
Post by: TKO on August 03, 2014, 10:23:21 AM
I have a problem where about 145 files out of a directory of 1700 won't show their images no matter how many times I rescan. The troublesome Canon raw CR2 files seem normal. They open in all other programs, have about the same size, can be edited in photoshop.

A disk file symptom check is fine and so is the Imatch database diagnostics.

Many of the files with the missing previews display OK in the Imatch viewer, but some have the "missing image" icon, some are blank, and some show a small thumbnail. Maybe 70% of the 145 "bad" files display OK.

I always shoot Canon raw, and as far as I know, 10's of thousands of files on the same hard drive are OK. Hard to know without checking every directory.

What's really funny is that the files in this directory have been randomly placed there after a "ratings" sort. The other "rating" directories are fine. I'm thinking a bad disk sector?????

Are these files damaged in some way? I'm going to run a bad sector scan on the 4 GB disk drive overnight . .

thanks!

Hi,
you mean you do not see any thumbnails for the pictures you mention? Do they display ok in the Quick View panel? It's possible that IMatch can not extract a preview from the RAW files. Please have a look at https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=2560.msg16558#msg16558 (https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=2560.msg16558#msg16558), one of Mario's posts in the FAQ section.

1. Please run a WIC diagnosis on one of the images (Help > Support > WIC Diagnostics).
2. Switch IMatch to debug logging under Help > Support
3. Rescan some of the files via Shift+Ctrl+F5 and then "Force..." and attach the log file. This will tell us if and which errors IMatch encounters while processing these files.

I forced a rescan per your instruction, and now that images have appeared! I must have forced a rescan 5 or 6 times yesterday, with no success, before and after running Imatch database diagnostics, exiting and restarting. The only difference is I did a full Windows disk scan overnight, but no errors were reported.

None the less, I am attaching the WIC diagnostics and Imatch log file (of the successful rescan.) Maybe you can see something unusual.

thanks again!

Nothing unusual in the log files. The installed codec cannot extract a preview from your files. Either the files have no embedded preview or the codec does not support them. That will not cause problems in IMatch because IMatch automatically falls back to loading the fill RAW. If we had a log file from the session where it failed, we may have some more info. These log files look good.

If it happens again, first thing: Help > Support > Copy Log File.
