Title: Inherit Properties from parent Category for new child
Post by: ChrisMatch on August 29, 2014, 11:28:38 AM
Hi

It would greatly help if a new child Category would inherit the properties from its parent.

My scenario is, that I use Color-Coding extensively and want to inherit the color of the parent to all of its children (e.g. so that every child category of 'Person' is shown in yellow and so on).
Every time I create a new child the property for 'Color-Coding' is 'Off' and I have to change that manually to 'Inherit'.

It's a minor thing - but for me, this would be a real time saver.

Thanks
Chris

Use a template category and do copy/paste.

Thanks for this tip - that really relaxes the problem - but is only a workaround (at least for me).

Copy-Paste from a template requires to:
- locate the template Category (which is not easy in a heavily branched tree)
- "paste" does NOT work in the Category panel (where I am working most of the time)

So thanks again for the tip - will definitely use it.
But if time permits I would still be happy to get this feature  ;)

If it's mostly colors you care for, that's already implemented.
Just use the New Categories... command (Shift+Ctrl+Ins). Enable the option "Inherit colors" to set the new categories to "inherit".

That's even better - easier - but still one drawback:
the option 'Inherit colors' is not remembered -> so I have to check it every time I add a new child.

But again: thanks for the tip - we are already very close to what I had hoped for  ;)

That should not be too much of a burden I hope. In the light that there are about 200 feature requests in the list above your's, you may have to live with this for a while.

Yes, I agree 100%. This issue developed from 'enoying' to 'hardly worth mentioning'  :)
And we have to keep some minor feature request to get solved in the years to come  ;)

I approve of this Feature Request very much.
Yes, it is not the most important enhancement. But it would be a good step to improve the logic of the system.
From my point of view the suggested feature would be more logic than the present behaviour.
