I know that I can assign files to categories, but I want a way to notate that an entire folder of whatever has been 'put under the microscope', so to speak. Instead of selecting all the files in that folder and assigning to categor(y/ies), is there a simple way to assign the folder itself to a category? If not, what is the workaround for this?
You cannot assign folders to categories.
Maybe a category with a @Folder formula serves the same purpose?
A different, simpler (more limited) option would be to use the folder Properties, e.g., to assign a specific color to such folders.
My approach would be to generate a dummy file in the folder and assign the category to it.
Did this in IM3 but it is easier in IM5
I would generate the dummy file using the batch processor.
Here is how:
specify to rename the file ( which you have to specify to invoke the batch proc) to 1,1 pixels. Put a canvas of desired size around this 1 dot image.
Put the folder name as text on the canvas.
Rename it so it shows as the first file in the folder (depends on your file naming scheme)
To use:
When you see the file on the thumbnail screen,select it and press Ctrl G to go to that folder.
A sample file is attached.

For me this would be the quickest and easiest way to do this.
I think this is an issue similar to stacking.
So the dummy file I propose can be seen as the top of a stack, the stack being all images in a folder.
(Ctrl-G expands this "stack")
When displaying a certain category we want to just see what folders hold
images and not the individual images.
Example: We make a category "Photoshoots with Model Cindy"
With this category we don't want to see all images of Cindy, we just want to
see what folders hold images from shoots with Cindy. (To pick one of them)
Using a @Folder formula would not help in this case - might just as well assign
the category to all images in the folder.
By the way: One can include a characteristic photo in the generated dummy file.
This would allow a visual selection.
