On a widescreen monitor, photos that are 3:2 or 4:3 leave empty space to the left and right when displayed. (Portrait oriented photos, 2:3 and 3:4, obviously leave even more.) I would like to use that space for the film strip, just as in IMatch 3, instead of having it take up precious vertical space.

This is already implemented for a long time. It just was not enabled ;)
Pressing <T><S> allows you to dock the film strip panel to any edge, starting with build 114.
