Pressing Ctrl-G in the viewer always returns to the image in the M&F view.
More logical/practical would be that it returns to the view from which the viewer was started.
If the viewer was started in the Category view then Ctrl-G should position to the image
back in the Category view. Ditto for Collections or time-line.
There is, of course, the problem that one may have changed image data which then removes the
image from the "starting view". How to handle those situations needs to be thought out: Position on the next
image or position in the M&F view?
(With Time-line there should be no problem since the date/time can not be changed in the viewer (?))
Ctrl+G is the Goto Folder command. It does what it says on the label.
Just press <ESC> to close the Viewer and set the focus to the last viewed image in whatever View you were. Just tried and works here.

If you are a few hundred images into a thousand, doing this manually is very difficult.
I recently had such an occurrence and found that there was no easy way to do this. I had to use a search for the file name
to find the file: Ctrl-G, then F2, Ctrl-a and Ctrl-C to copy the file name, then switch to Category view and copy the
file name into the search bar (Ctrl-c).
If Ctrl-G would do this positioning then, by doing Ctrl-G two times, one would have the current functionality.
ESC positions the focus to the currently selected file. At least it does so here. Independent from the View you are in. Did you try that?
Esc will do it. The cost of starting the viewer again after is negligible.
Just never thought about this.
I will add a corresponding note to the keyboard shortcut list in the Viewer help. <F12>, <X> or <Esc> all do the same.
