Title: Geotagging - Switching from Hebrew and Arabic to English
Post by: Gaestehaus on July 07, 2019, 09:25:35 AM
Hello

I geotagged my photos recently taken in Israel and Palestine. Unfortunately, the OpenStreetMap within IMatch displays streets, monuments etc. in Hebrew or Arabic. I can't read these languages. But I am unable to switch the map to English.

There are OpenStreetMaps in English for Israel and Palestine (see http://download.geofabrik.de/asia/israel-and-palestine.html (http://download.geofabrik.de/asia/israel-and-palestine.html)) in pbf-Format.

How can I use the English (or German) descriptions?

IMatch uses the language set under Edit > Preferences > Geo & Maps to "connect" to whatever map provider you use.
Google, Bing, HERE etc. use that language to display the labels on your map in that language (or even in the original and your language).

OpenSteetMao is special because they have the labels hard-coded (embedded) in the tile bitmaps they serve from their tile servers.
As far as I know one would have to use different tile servers for different languages, which is apparently not something OpenLayers (which IMatch uses to interface with OSM, Bing and HERE maps) does not support it. They always use the official OSM servers.

This is explained fairly well here: https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/60673/display-names-in-english  (the green part)

That there are some maps in your language downloadable somewhere from a server does not help the Map Panel in IMatch. It cannot use these downloads.

So,

I created successfully a BING key and copied it into Edit Menu > Preferences > Geo & Maps

But:

Under "Provider Search" and "Geocoding Service" I find Google, not Microsoft Bing. Can't I use the Bing maps?

I don't support BING for searching and geo-coding. I support 3 services: GeoNames.org, Google and HERE.

OK,

I switched to HERE. Works.

Very well. Good that IMatch offers so many options and does not lock you into one service  :)
