I have never been able to get the desired result when using the "--" recursive category exclusion in the "Categories" section of the Filter panel.

I have a selection of files open in the file window,  turn on the category exclusion tab,  and choose a category branch to exclude recursively, but nothing happens.    I can go into individual files and find ones who have a category from the excluded branch listed in their 'Current" tab of the Categories panel, but they still show in the file window in spite of the desired exclusion.

What am I missing?   Are there limitations to the recursive exclusion?   The categories that I am trying to exclude are only one or two levels deep in the recursively selected branch.

A parent category virtually contains all files of its child categories.
Excluding the parent will exclude all files you see in the File Window in the Category View when you click on the parent category.
So, ticking the box for the parent category in the Category Filter will include or exclude all files in the parent and children automatically, also depending on the AND/OR Boolean switches.
Exceptions are when you set the parent to "Direct Assignments only", which is why the ++  and -- exist, I believe.

Ah, it was the Direct Assignments setting.   Thanks.
