Did you read this thread?

https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=5854.50

You may have experienced the same problem.

I downloaded 5.7.2 without problems (download time about 45 sec).

ben

ah, ok. I didn't read the whole thread since i assumed it is only related to v5.6.22.

My download stops exactely after 2 minutes. So the download obviously fails for the same reason.

If the file size is around 90MB, than in order to download the file under 2 minutes, you need around 700kByte/s average speed.
My DSL connection barely reaches over 600-700kB/s peak. This is due to bad wiring in the house :-(

So i simply wait until Mario finds a solution.

Sorry, for this dublicate post.

Sven, if your download takes longer than 2 minutes you have to wait until I come up with a solution. As explained in the thread https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=5854.50 the new server farm has a 2 minute timeout limit which I did not now before. The hosting company did not tell me this and only confirmed it after I found out. This affects only the download and only for users who have a slow connection that causes the download to exceed 120 seconds.

I'm working on it and I hope the hosting company comes up with a feasible plan. I don't want to spend another week moving photools.com and everything yet to another server.

I today got notice that it is not possible to increase the hard 120 second timeout on the package I have.

Instead I need to setup a new contract for a second server with some special options. Once the server is set up I need to manually transfer all domains, all databases, the community, the customer portal, the photools.com web site and everything else to the new machine. I expect this to cost me at least one week of work, with potential problems caused by transferring domains (went wrong the last time, not my fault) and buying and installing yet another SSL certificate (also failed the last time without my error because the hosting company forgot to install the required intermediate certificates on their server - and hence FF and Chrome rejected the certificate...took them two days to fix.

In short: I'd rather not.

Not only would the new server cost 3 times as much as the current package, I also lose options to scale the hardware as needed by just upgrading to a higher managed package.
And I currently just don't have the nerve to throw away the work of the last two weeks (many all-nighters) and start all over again - just because of the stupid 120 second limit which interferes with slow downloads.

I will think about another solution. Maybe a CDN or a dedicated server box just for the download script. Or, if the idea works I had this morning, I can solve the problem myself in the customer web - thankfully I have programmed that myself and I have full control over it.

Please let us know when you have the resolved the issue by changes to customer web.
I'm travelling and staying in an airBnB place with 200 kb/s limit so it will need time to download.

You are right not to throw away a lot of work and all-nighters. There must be relatively few users with low data rates.

Thanks,
Aubrey.

I've work on this last night and I have found a quite good solution.

Please see https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?topic=5886.msg40633#msg40633 for full details.

Let me know below if you have been successful.

I have had the issue, but it works without a problem now!  :) Thank you for the fast solution.

Aubrey

Yes it's fine, I'm up and running.
Well done excellent response time. Thanks again Mario..  ;)  ;D

Touching on another issue, for information:
Last week there was a discussion ( i can't find the thread now) about the file having a digital signature; Mario has ensured that this is setup. A user commented that he was getting an unrecognized file. I may have an explanation. When I first tried to download IMatch 5.7.2 on the slow network when it stopped I thought it had downloaded. I then tried to install this partial download, I got the message "Windows protected your PC . "Windows smart screen protected an unrecognized app from starting". Of course in hindsight the reason for this message was that not all the executable had downloaded.

Aubrey.

The certificate is only shown by Windows Explorer (and validated) when the file is complete. A incomplete file does not show the certificate and is also rejected during installation (InstallShield / Windows Installer recognize the incomplete install package and stop).

Just tried this - had to remember to clear my cache before I could see the new version of the portal to get the new alternate link to show up, but after I did that l used the alternative and although the speed was quite slow (150-200 KB/s) the process completed just fine and resulted in a file of the right size and with the relevant digital signature info present.  (This was after the regular process had again timed out).

200 KB/sec is lousy. Since the file is served via Europe's biggest backbone and I had users from Canada and Australia (often handicapped with slow bandwidth) download the file in less than a minute...maybe you should check with your ISP and ask him why he offers so little bandwidth for this route.

Quote, click here for the alternative download.
Works great
Thanks

Alternative Download works great  ;D ;D ;D
Thanks Mario for the quick fix!!!

But please don't consider a 6MBit/s connection a very slow connection (that's what you roughly need to get the download in under 2 minutes). I think there are more than enough people with this bandwidth or a smaller one. Even though, iMatch users seem to be more lucky in general (only 5%) ;-)

Able to download successfully!!

In my neck of the woods - regional Queensland Australia -  6mb/s is as good as it get's so I couldn't met the 120 second curfew https://www.photools.com/community/Smileys/default/cry.gif

Mario

Well, now we have a solution that should work for all connection speeds. There are some IMatch users who work on ships  - they may now also be able to download updates while on sea and not only when they're docking

The 2 minute timeout is unfortunate, but luckily only the download feature is affected. Everything else runs nice and shiny on the new server. And I can now manage everything from everywhere using only a notebook. Hurray. And I now pay about 30% of what I paid before. Only one server, fully scalable. Like!
