Has something happened to the order images are displayed in the slideshow? I used it last in an earlier version, when there was not a problem.  The relevant part of the help topic states:

Selection
The slide show uses the current selection of files in the active file window. If only one file is selected, the slide show uses all files in the file window, and starts with the selected file.

To select a range of files, left-click a file and then Shift+left-click another file. This selects all files between the two clicked files. The slide show starts with the file that was clicked last. By choosing which file you click first and last when making a selection you can easily control which file is displayed first when the slide show opens.

With sort profile set to Capture Time, smart filename, or title, on selecting just one file in the scope, the first to be displayed is not that file and the order of display seems to be random.   On selecting all files, the first to be displayed is the not the last one selected, as stated in the help topic, and again the order of display seems to be random.

I can not reproduce what you see: I tried different sort profiles (Default, Capture Time, Checksum). With all of them, the slide show works as expected. Also, when using the click / shift-click selection, the file selected last with shift-click is the first that is displayed. Everything ok, so far as I can see. Sort order is respected, first file is what I expected to see...

Thanks Thrinn. So it must be something wrong with my system.

Sounds like you may have
Preferences > Slideshow > Random Sequence
Checked.

John - many thanks - I had not noticed that.   Doh.... :-[

Ah-Hah!  ;)
Good that I've waited a few hours. This saves me time analyzing your problem report.
