Version master indicator is an orange square, usually it's simply split in 2 with an orange rectangle and a clear rectangle.

Other times the clear rectangle has vertical bars running through it - what is this indicating? I've looked in the Versioning section of the manual but not found an answer.

As readers can see from this question and preceding one... I'm doing a massive database housekeeping operation - and about time too!
In my early days (2008 and earlier) I used to archive my photographs per day of month and reset the counter on my camera after a download (ugh!). This meant I could not archive per month, as duplicate file names would occur. The operation also is allowing me to tidy up keywording and ensure that information has been propagated to versions from masters.

Well with IMatch, I use shutter count variable to clean up names in the renamer. I doubt this would be such a simple solution in any other database software! I can then group images per month in folders.

I know all this is strictly not necessary as the database doesn't care where images reside and one can do timeline searches but... I like to keep things neat and structured.

There are version stacks and regular stacks. The icons look different. Regular stacks use a stack icon (vertical bars).

I also originally thought it was because there were stacked files, but there are none. I checked using F9,S on the master, the stacks window is empty. I have also "right clicked" and selected unstack files.

Attached is a picture of what I am seeing, the vertical bars are visible (see read arrow indicating). This is similar to the picture immediately below the title "Version Commands in the File Window" in https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#rel_versions.htm.

The blue arrow indicates what I usually see...

Expanded and collapsed version stacks. If you see the horizontal strips, the stack is collapsed. Press <T> to toggle the stack.

Only seeing vertical stripes and I'm sure that I don't have stacked files. I'm not sure why some times there are vertical stripes and other times not.... see blue and red arrows on attached jpg.

In any case all files sorted in the directory, so everything is fine for me.

The icon is for something, I found it (or at least I think I found) in the resource-files, see attachement.

Aubrey talkes from the orange icon, second on the right side, I think.

The filename is rating_icons_16x16.png ...

hence, Mario, you will know, what it means, I think.

I tried to see this icon in my images, without success.
Best wishes from Switzerland! :-)

The icon toggles when you toggle the stack:

Thew stripes show when the stack is collapsed. To toggle, press <T> when the master or a version is selected/focused.

Thanks, now I understand.
I had noticed that stack collapsed has a double line on right edge of image. I had not made the connection with the stack icon.
Now all is clear for me.  :)
