Next to a number of fields in the metadata panel a "lock icon" is showed (e.g. IPTC caption). If you hover its tells you that you cannot modify this field since it is linked to some other field ("to an XMP field").

Can you make it possible to show to which field it is linked?

Thanks,

Difficult. In many cases IMatch does not know this exactly because I leave that to ExifTool. ExifTool adapts to changes in the MWG recommendation as needed and I don't want to duplicate this logic in IMatch. This will lead to inconsistencies over time.

Th general idea is to not show mapped tags at all in the Metadata Panel.  Not only may the display 'out-of-synch' data when the metadata has not been written to the file, but this also causes questions like yours. I added the locking feature only to handle the exceptional case where a user for some reason mixes IPTC/EXIF and XMP data in the same Metadata Panel.

For what it's worth several months ago when I was configuring my custom metadata panel layouts the way I solved this little issue was to start with one test image that contained metadata and in the default metadata browser I just looked to see which tags contained the exact same text for the IPTC caption.  Then one by one I changed the text in each of those tags which could be edited, then wroteback the metadata to file.  When I found the one tag whose text would be copied to all the other similar tags, that's the one I used.  For the IPTC caption that turned out to be the XMP Dublin Core Description tag.

The whole process didn't take very long because the only other tags I needed to edit were the location tags and for me the best one of those to use were the composite tags.
