Good morning

After loading recent iphone pictures into the database, I have ended up with a lkot of HEIC
First, they were not displaying (neither in thumbnail in file view, neither in viewer).
I installed and Microsoft HEIF extension (I run Windows 10 1909)
No change

I then installed Copytrans HEIC
https://www.copytrans.net/copytransheic/
I rebooted
I rescanned the folder in IM
And now, the thumnails are ok in File windows, the photo open in Viewer, but always in Landscape (while the thumbnail opens in the right orientation)
If I rotate the image in iMatch, then it displays fine in Viewer, but the thumbnail does not have the right orientation.

Any advise on this? Are there better HEIC extensions for Windows 10?

Thanks

Pierre

I have so far not experienced any HEIF files which the Microsoft HEIF extension could not handle.
Did you force an update of the files in IMatch after installing the WIC codec? Using Shift+Ctrl+F5, Force Update?

HEIC/HEIF is a really, really crappy file format, infested by so many software patents from Apple and Nokia...nobody really wants to touch it.

Everybody who wants to use it must pay royalties (money) to Apple, Nokia, the MPEG group and others.
Which is also the reason why Windows does not come by default with the HEIC WIC codec. Because Microsoft needs to pay royalties for every install of this codec. And if they only pay for users actually installing the codec instead for every Windows user, they save money.

If the built in HEIC/HEIF codec in Windows does not handle your files, and the other codec I have never heard of before also fails to handle them properly, I strongly encourage you to consider using standard file formats to store your images.

Mario, I think I will follow your advise then.
Do you have recomended tools to perform the conversion from HEIC?

Mario

Nope, sorry. I'm not on an Apple platform and I don't know tools for this. Apple only offers conversion to JPEG, I believe?
Photoshop etc. does not support HEIC/HEIF on Windows. Lightroom is supposed to handle them, but at least Lr Classic 9 on my system does not. Or does not like the HEIC/HEIF sample images I have.
