Types of files considered for DB

Currently working my way thru my initial install on win7 64bit
quad core i7 with 8gb ram

As install is progressing I seem to have established a DB and im5 is processing the 2000 or so images.

Seems I should have seen something regarding what kinds of files I want in the DB but so far I've not
seen anything that would allow that.

Further looking thru the available menus I either do not see such an item or do not recognize it.
I fully expected to see something pop up when I added the folders to be processed but nothing like
that has ocurred.

I'll admit I was not very thorough in reading thru the provided help file... but something like what to include in the
db seems it would be a significant enough issue that the user would see it come up in no uncertain terms.

I suspect I'm missing something basic here so hopefully some of you other Beta testers can straighten me out.

Can you clarify?

I assume you added the folders you wanted to include in your database. In general, IMatch by default tracks image files (including RAW files), video files, MP3 files, and various document types.

After IMatch has finished adding the folders, you'll be able to see the folders and their contents in the File window. Certain specific file types aren't currently tracked by IMatch; you'll see requests for such file formats in the Feature Requests child board: https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?board=12.0

Or did I mus-understand your question?

I probably wasn't clear enough.

In imatch 3.6 (and earlier) when you created a data base, one of the steps is to either accept the default file
types  to be included or select only those you want to be in the data base.  I always excluded html and text
files for example. Usually excluded the video file types too.  At least for the main data base.

But , in imatch 5, when creating a database ,I never saw such a dialog.  I never saw anything like the old (3.6)
dialog where you can select the file types you want and exclude others.

Is there no opportunity to select which file types you want in your data base in imatch5?

No. IMatch 5 by default ingests all supported file formats in the folders you include in your database.

OK, thanks.  Is it like that to simplify coding?  Or some other reason?

One of the design goals for IMatch 5 was to make it easier to use, especially for causal users. Less options, less steps to get your images into the database.
Also, experience tells me that only a few users ever used the possibility in IMatch 3 to explicitly skip file formats when scanning folders. It is often the other way round, users want IMatch to ingest additional formats (see the corresponding threads in the feature request board.

I have a feature on my to-do list to allow users configure additional file formats. This may then also include an option to disable formats.

Well, thank you Mario.  You seem to be way ahead of the game.  I didn't think this was a big deal but its nice to know there is
some thought to allow choices on what gets ingested.

Can you tell me: If video images are in the targeted directories do they require heightened process time, compared to still images?

Mario

Most likely. Video files are usually much bigger than image files. IMatch will need more time to calculate the check-sum and other file-size dependent information. For video files, IMatch utilizes built-in services in Windows to extract a thumbnail. Windows itself uses the installed codecs for the given format. How long this process takes varies greatly.  The IMatch log file in Debug mode contains timing data for each file processed.

It would be very nice to have the ability to disable certain file formats, as in IMatch 3, when scanning and indexing directory trees in which unwanted file formats might be present, so I also hope this feature will be implemented in the future  :) .

Cheers,

I support this request.
Since Mario has added this functionality some time ago, what exactly are you supporting?
