RAW ingest for Panasonic DMC:FZ50

I have just ingested some images taken some 5-6 years ago with Panasonic FZ50.  The raw extension for this camera is .RAW, which is included in the file format list of LM5.  IM5 does not render this format - see attached - but it does render the RW2 format of later FZ series cameras.  Is there a setting that I have missed, or  (as I suspect) is IM5 not yet geared up for many "heritage" formats?

Select one of the files and then perform a WIC diagnosis via Help > Support > WIC diagnosis.
Attach the result. This will tell us if the installed WIC codec recognizes this format.

The codec does not recognise it.   Test result copied below:

Codec 'GIF Decoder' for extensions .gif

At the risk of sounding like a tout, you may want to check out the Fast Picture Viewer codec. I suspect it supports the DMC-FZ50.

Thanks for the thought. I think that I must have the appropriate codec.  The .raw format is rendered in other applications - Breeze Browser, Lightroom, Photo Ninja.

Mario

All the programs you mention  don't use WIC codecs. I'm not entirely sure about BreezeBrowser, though.

IMatch by default uses the WIC codecs. If this fails, it falls back to trying to load the file with the imaging library I use. If this also fails to produce even a small thumbnail, IMatch can only add the file to the database but without a proper visual.

Please download and install the latest Panasonic WIC codec to solve this. If you don't want to do that or Panasonic does not offer WIC codecs, maybe send a sample file to Microsoft so they can consider adding support for the RAW format you are using into one of their next codec versions.

I have installed the MS codec pack, but it does not work in IM5 with FZ50 raw.   I have looked at the Fast Picture site Viewer and Panasonic .raw is not included in their list.  I cannot find anything relevant on the Panasonic website and have sent them an email request.  Watch this space.  The only .raw format I can find is associated with Leica.

Mario

The Microsoft codec pack supports a wide range of models, but not all.
You can send me (or upload) a sample file and I test it here. I have the FPV codec pack installed.

Is this a very new or a rather oder model? I'm not too well informed about Panasonic digital bodies. :-[

FZ50 is older - I bought it, I think, in 2008.  As I said above it uses .raw extensions, whereas more recent models use .rw2, which works fine in IM5.  But I have some 2 years worth of FZ50 images (~6000), so would like to be able to view them in IM5.

I am not 100% sure, but I bet that the Leica VLux1 is a rebadged Panasonic Lumix.
So when a WIC supports Leica .raw it may support Pana .raw as well.

Hope this helps.
Enjoy!

Herman.

Thanks, Herman.  The attached screen shot of M5 formats shows that IM5 should support the .raw extension for both Leica and Panasonic.  I will see what else mario has to say.

The FPC codecs handle the file without problems. Also the other Panasonic RAW samples, and Leica RAW samples I have here (Leica and Panasonic are mostly identical).

So either Microsoft updates their codecs to include support for this model, Panasonic gives you a working codec or you have to spend the money for the FPV codecs, I'm afraid.

Thanks for trying, Mario - C'est la vie :(
