Comparing marking files with X or DEL key

I prefer using DEL key because I can skip over marked files

I prefer the X key because I don't have to deal with the dialogue box every time I exit the viewer.

Is it possible to make files for deletion, hide or skip over in the viewer, and not have the dialogue box when exiting the viewer.

Hiding rejecting files in the viewer would be great (using filter) especially when displaying more than one image. For example if I am culling more than eight similar images it would be good to gradually filter out without having to exit the viewer then open it again

When you reject a file in the Viewer, the Viewer automatically moves to the next file.
Files with a reject rating (or any other rating) are not skipped by the Viewer.

That's what the <Del> key is for in the Viewer, to mark files, to skip them when navigating and to decide what to do with them when you close the Viewer.

Pick one of the two.

When I reject a file, wouldn't it be possible to have an option in preferences so that the users could chose on closing the viewer to have imatch default to reject the images and skip the dialogue box.

This would be certainly doable. Post a feature request so we can learn how many other users would like to have this.
