Is changing your keyword list by importing a text the same as editing in house?

Using word, notepad or notepad++ is easier for me than editing the thesaurus within IMatch but I was wondering if the changes I make will "map" the same way as if I made the changes within IMatch.  For instance, would it know how to apply the changes to the database appropriately if the keywords were not moved or renamed within IMatch?  I don't know how IMatch would be able to figure out where everything was moved with an imported text files, but maybe it is possible. What is the difference between importing a text file and editing the list within IMatch?

The feature to export a thesaurus to a file is designed to transfer it to another database.
Not for external editing in a Word Processor.
Importing a thesaurus from XML will do just that - replace the existing thesaurus. This will not change keywords in your files.

And before you ask: no, this is not a missing feature I should add.
Use the Thesaurus Editor integrated in IMatch to change your thesaurus if you want IMatch to apply the changes to your database.
