Hi all,

Although I´m very happy with my current Metadata settings using general IPTC and XMP tags, I´m tented by the Darwin Core option that Imatch offer. Most of my pics are related to the natural wold, specially plants, thus my interest in Darwin Core. Please, does any Imatch user out there using it? Any advise or info retated to this classificaton system?

Thanks a lot,

felipe

A good starting point is usually http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/
It's rather complex, I'm afraid. A quick reference is here: http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/index.htm

Thanks a lot Mario for your answer.
It seems to me a great idea to include Darwin Core in IMatch then. I was more familiar with DrC from the natural history museums and botanical gardens specimens databases, in general terms called biological data recording. I personally think that pictures (plants, animals, etc) should be included in that term too. And I acknowledge IMatch for taking this idea too, including DrC scheme within its metadata capabilities. For example, this gives the posibility to users like me to easily move from IPTC of XMP to DrCore, and then use this pictures in biological recording work or databases. I wonder how many users of Imatch are taking note of this posibility.

I'm not sure about how many users use this. I've added support for DarwinCore because I've got requests from scientific users.
Phil was so friendly to add DarwinCore to ExifTool so it knows how to read and write the data.
I've then added a sample Metadata Panel layout for this specific namespace . which is not necessarily optimal, it's just a demo. But you can create your own Metadata Panel layout to show exactly the tags from DarwinCore, or mix them with regular XMP tags as needed. Metadata Panel layouts are very flexible - don't look for something like this other applications out there  ;)

I'm using iMatch for very similar purposes.
My subject area is Diptera (UK)
Darwin Core underpins the data structure of national repositories, specifically GBIF (Europe), similar ones would be Atlas of Living Australia, Encyclopedia of Life and the UK's NBN Gateway, all of which publish species occurrences online.
Upload to these systems is mainly via "Biocollections Data Publishers", usually big institutions like museums who manage Darwin Core databases.
Online citizen science programmes are increasingly being used to pass data directly to the national repositories (examples are UK's iSpot and iRecord, ALA has a system too and there are many specific projects worldwide.) Photographs are increasingly being submitted to these sites for identification then upload.
I've barely begun to use the Darwin Core in iMatch, my interest is in data sharing and I'm not aware of any mechanisms to do this via picture metadata, I'm just hoping to burn the data to pictures in my collection when I can figure out how to write.

The data you enter for Darwin Core becomes and integral part of the XMP metadata IMatch manages for your files. If you let IMatch write-back the data and you send your image to another person or institution, they can see the data you have entered. The automated systems used by museums etc. pick up the data automatically as well.

Menace

Today I am working the first time with Darwin Core and I love it (after putting/writing the taxon-Metadata the renaming ist much fast).

But: I want to make a hierarchical databased Categorie-View (The Taxon are hierarchical) and I need 7 levels: Kingdom|Phylum|Class|Order|Family|Genus|Specific Epithet
But the databased categories have just 6 Levels. Any chance to change this to 7 levels?

Another Question: A lot of the Darwin code are the same data (like Kingdom: Animal). Is there a possibility to put the data from the history inside when starting typing.

I type "A" and than the field show already "Animal"?

Edit: Sorry, Mario. Stupid me. Copy & Paste is much faster.  ;D
