In Imatch 3.6 you could click on one of the buttons. And that would change your view to a Category of Dates like Year > Month > and Day. How can I do this in IMatch 5?

I'm not quite sure that I can follow...

Do you know about the Timeline View in IMatch 5? Here Match automatically arranges your images by year, month and day.
View menu > > Views > Timeline or just click on the timeline tab near the top.

(IMatch 3 used a data-driven category for a similar functionality, if this is what you mean).

I need to set up away where I can have my images come in to IMatch 5 in categories like this:  \Year\Month\Day. So I pull my images from there and put them in one of my Universal Catalog.

Can somebody tell me how I can do this?

If the timeline is not what you want, you can create a data-driven category for the same purpose. This is actually one of the examples in the help topic about data-driven categories. Just have a look.

The timeline and categories are not the same. The timeline automatically arranges your files along a timeline and makes it easy to find images taken on specific days or over certain periods. Categories are categories.

Your screen shots show Word documents. These Word documents have been saved without an embedded preview. IMatch can hence not show a preview. Make sure you save your Word documents with an embedded preview - that's an option you have to enable in Word. See the Word help for details.

The MP3 files in your other screen shot have no embedded cover image. IMatch can hence only show the generic icon for these files, as delivered by Windows. Use a proper MP3 software which can download and embed cover images in your MP3 files.

Since I have turned 70 it is very hard to remember things and it very discouraging.   " you can create a data-driven category for the same purpose" Would you show me how to do this?

QuoteI want to copy my images from here in drive D:\Images and drop them into my File Window? I want them to show up sorted by Year> Month > Week and Date >.

I'm not sure that I understand the d:\images part.
First thing is of course to add your files to your IMatch database.
When you now switch to the Time Line View you see your images already sorted by Year. Month, Day. If you click on a year, the File Window shows all files from that year. You can click on the arrow in front of the nodes to show the children (Months, Days).

If you also want to create categories which automatically group your files by year, month, day you create a data-driven category for that purpose. It will have three levels (year, month, day) and will be based on the "Date Subject Created" metadata tag - this metadata tag represents the time the photos were created.

I have attached a data-driven category export file for you.

1. Download the ZIP file attached below to folder on your hard disk and extract its content. This gives you a file named "date.imcsx".

2. In IMatch, open the Import & Export panel via View menu > Panels >...

3. Click on the RUN button in the Category Import module.

4. In the file browser that opens, select the file "date.imcsx" you have just extracted from the ZIP file.

5. You now find a category named Files by Date in the IMatch Category View. This data-driven category arranges your files by Year/Month/Day.

6. You can now look at the data-driven category and see how it's done.  Let me know if you have questions.

Please don't add such huge quotes into your posts. It makes them unreadable, especially for users using mobile devices.

QuoteHow can I get my attachments to show up with out haveing to post and then modify my file in order to see the images?

If you want to show your images show up 'in-line' you have to modify your post manually. Else they will just show at the bottom. See also the community help (toolbar near the top) and the photools.community help: https://www.photools.com/community/index.php?board=20.0

QuoteHow can I get these files to show up as pdf?
Which files and where?

QuoteHow did you get thes categories and how did you get the color?

Do you mean in my screen shot? These are not categories, this is the Timeline View in IMatch.

6. You can now look at the data-driven category and see how it's done.  Let me know if you have questions. Now how do Isee how this is done?

Did you answer these?

QuoteLike the green MP3and the pink pdf

You can use colors to make categories stand out. To color-code categories, use the options provided in the panel below the category tree.

The MP3 and PDF categories you mention are automatically generated by IMatch when it creates a new database - you can find them under the "IMatch Sample Categories" top-level category.

Can you help me to color code my Microsoft catageory? I have looked and tried to get this to work.

use the options provided in the panel below the category tree.  I can't find this.

I don't think you can color code timeline generated categories.

Mario

Don't confuse the IMatch Timeline with categories.
The screen shot you attached to your post shows the Timeline View. The Timeline View automatically groups your files by date. This is a feature that was not available in IMatch 3.

But you wanted a category that categorizes your files by year/month/day (like in IMatch 3).
I explained that this functionality is already available in the IMatch Timeline. You wanted a category anyway. So I created one for you.

To see and edit properties for categories, you need to switch to the Category View.

Ok I'm in Catageories > Properties but when I look at the Text Color. How do you change the color?

One more question? What does the check box "Return to this topic." do and when should I use it?

1. Return to this topic brings you back to the same topic after you have made your post. This is on by default and shoiuld be.

2. To change the color of a category you must enable color-coding first. It's Off in your screen shot. Set it to "Color-coding enabled". Then you can click into the Text Color / Background Color fields and click on the ... button to choose a color.

I highly recommend that you make yourself aquatinted with these category properties and features by reading the help topic about categories in the IMatch help system. I've spend months writing all this and it is impossible to repeat this bit for bit in community postings. I think you will gain much by reading the help topic and try things out. This way you'll quickly see which of the features are useful for you, and which aren't.

I also recommend the  IMatch knowledge-base article

Use Visual Clues to Improve Your Workflow

which has a special section about using Category color-coding for various purposes.
