Masters outside of selection

Hello,
I am struggling with some workflow logic and I was wondering what your thoughts are on this:

After processing my files from a shooting, I will have images that were fine straight from the camera, and I have files that needed editing, so of those I have masters and versions. My final selection for publishing will contain a subset of those images, none of the masters and only one version of possibly several per master.

Working on with this selection, I fairly often happen to want to add further metadata/categories. The problem then is that this data should be added to the masters, too - which are not part of the selection, however.

I haven't found a good way to deal with this. Widening the selection to include the masters to begin with defeats the purpose to have only those files selected that will be published.
Any ideas?
