When I want to select a lot of photos to change location shown country name, the metadata panel just says "updating" and nothing happens. Is it a way to avoid this?

Mario

How many photos did you select?
"Updating" is usually shown while IMatch is still ingesting files in the background. Check the Info & Activity panel to see if files are read or written in the background.
Also check the files selected for a "updating" icon (blue circle). Maybe one file failed to import and IMatch is retrying all the time?

Well, I tried to select about 2000 photos first. This was to many. Then I tried some hundred photos, still updating. Then under 100, but Imatch is still updating.

When I want to change the country name, I guess I have to change it in the metadata panel and write the metadata back to files.

But if I have location data (country, region, city, location) in my keywords, is there still a good reason to fill the location data in the metadata panel?

2000 files is not a problem. IMatch will normally just display this message:

But when the MD panel shows "Updating..." something is going on in the database, e.g. one or more of the selected files are being indexed in the background or a write-back is running. Hence my comments above. Did you check what I've asked for?

Location data usually does not go primarily into keywords. It's pretty much useless there, except for you (because you KNOW what you consider as location data).
The primary place for location data are the official country, city and location metadata fields. Copying the same info into keywords is optional and can even be automated in IMatch.
This not only allows IMatch to automatically organize your images in the standard "Location" categories, but also (if your files have GPS data) to place your files on the map in the Map Panel.

But, in the end, whatever works for you is good.
There are just standard workflows and recommendations. It's your data and image collection. Do whatever works and you feel comfortable with.

Take a look at the attachment. Her you can see a screenshot. It is just 50 photos selected here, so I am surprised that Imatch is updating.

Can you read something special from the info & activity panel?  I can not see a updating icon anywhere.

Can it be a bug? If Imatch should handle 2000 photos easy, something must be going on in the background, or a bug? I have waited several minutes now, but still updating....

Mario

No idea.
Maybe switch to the "Default" layout for the Metadata Panel.
Run a diagnosis to check that the database is OK.

If you don't mind a comment from another user, I can endorse what Mario says. At one point, I was using GeoSetter for location data (before IMatch added mapping capabilities) and for some reason had it configured to write keywords as well as the location tags. I eventually realized I was just duplicating data, and worse, the keywords were all 'flat' and not hierarchical. That made using the keywords awkward at best (as opposed to using a data-driven hierarchical Category). I'm still cleaning up a few stray location keywords...
