Categories vs Collections

I have a number of images which I enter into competitions , sometimes as a print, sometimes as a digital image.  What do you think is the simplest way to mark these files so I can quickly view them- category or collection?

Both will work equally well.

But for this purpose, I would probably use color-coded categories, since I not only can mark the files as being in a competition, but also in which (via the category name) and add additional info (via the category comment).

If I need only the "in competition" info, a dot or pin will do fine as well.
