Custom Sort Order in Result Windows?

From time-to-time, I use a custom sort order before I rename a group of files because my renamer preset has a 'Group By' so the order the files are renamed is important.

Today it didn't work -I am in a Results Window to isolate the files and Custom Sort doesn't allow me to move any files around.  Reading the Help, I think this is working as designed.

I must have been lucky the other times and was working inside a folder which do support Custom Sort Order (in my current situation, the files are scattered across multiple folders).

My first thought is to populate a tag with my desired sequence, sort by the tag and after renaming delete the tag contents?   I hope there is a better way.


Suggestions on a simple way to gather files from various folders and then apply a one-time, temporary Custom Sort order?

Custom sort orders cannot work in Result Windows - which are temporary by nature. No "place" to store the custom sort order.

Suggestions on a simple way to gather files from various folders and then apply a one-time, temporary Custom Sort order?   

Just collect them into a (temporary) category (e.g. via copy & paste or the IMatch Clipboard. Then you can apply a custom sort order too.
