AI Tags v Traits

I'm a bit unclear about the distinction between AI Tags and Traits. The AI Metadata panel ships with three default AI tags and a separate section 'Traits'. The Help describes how to set up new custom AI Trait Tags, which can be shown anywhere in the AI Metadata panel (or in any other metadata panel).  It also says that Custom Traits are only available for AIs supporting custom prompts. In practice, I've found that I can display a custom name, AI.ScientificName, anywhere in the AI Metadata panel.

Is the intention that user-created Traits be displayed in the 'Traits' portion of the AI Metadata template, reserving the AI Tags portion for default tags that may change over time? I'm just trying to understand any implied distinctions between the terms.

There are no rules.

AI Trait tags are just user-defined tags. They are stored in the database like any other tag and can be used like any other tag.
They are not stored in the image during write.-back.

If you create trait tags (AI Tags) or not is up to you.
Where you show them in the Metadata Panel is up to you.

The MD Panel has no feature to "automagically" add new tags to one or more layouts.
Since the 3 AI tags description, keywords and landmarks always exist, I've added them to the AI Metadata Panel layout, and added a second "Traits" set as an encouragement for users to add their own trait tags there.

When you create new trait tags, IMatch informs you that you have to add the tag to a MD Panel layout or FW layout yourself to see them.

Adding the "empty" Traits set was maybe an mistake - because it can make a user think that something is about to happen there. There is no way for me to add a comment or action statement there, and users would probably not read it anyway.

I think I will rename the Traits set to something like

Image3.jpg

which will only affect new databases of course. Or users who import the new layouts.

It's hard to foresee every stumbling point or area of fuzzy wording/instructions users will encounter when you work six months on a feature group like AutoTagger.

Inevitably, users will come up with questions of expectations I never have thought of ;)
