Protected Folders

Have just tried out 'Protected Files' which works quite well except you can still add Pins, Star Ratings etc to the hidden file, but I can live with that.

May I request something  similar to 'Protected Files'  but for 'Folders'.

Folder does not display its contents unless a password is provided.

Hi Mario
I had a look at your link but I don't think that has anything to do with my request for 'Protected Folder' unless I have misunderstood what you mean.

Mario

The sole purpose of protected files is to prevent accidental display of thumbnails etc. It's not to hide metadata, folders, categories or whatnot. It does not protect files from being modified and you can still change metadata and collections. And that's all that I have planned for it and I have currently no plans to add more functionality to this in the foreseeable future. There are plenty of other ways to hide and protect files already, e.g. using filters.

Hi P.Jones
I think, Mario thought at his statement, like this here, written in that thread.

As I explained before starting to develop this feature, it is not a security feature, it's not to hide metadata or anything else.
The sole purpose of protecting a file is display the visual only when explicitly enabled. It does not hide the metadata in the file window, nor in the App panel, nor in the Metadata or Keyword panels, the file window tip, the text overlays in the Viewer or the Slide show.

The quickly integrated possibility to hide images is not a high secured thing to hide files. It it simply a good and easy possibility for a user, to hide some files.

This hiding is of course not sure, a user could see very good some text and if he knows IMatch, also a thumb of a protected image. (I have not tested yet for example the batching)

The protection of IMatch could be see, I think, as a kind of hiding images, not seen by a visitor by accident. For this the solution, like we have it now, is very good.

BTW: be able to add still pins, stars and so on could be also an advantage. Becasue I usually know, what the images are and can work still with the protected images, by adding for example a bookmark.

I could imagine a better hiding, on what you are thinking maybe, but I think, this would mean - I guess - a lot more coding for Mario - for only a few users.

Most users will be happy, like it is now.

Best wishes from Switzerland! :-)

I think for higher protection one can encrypt files. I think of Axcrypt.
If someone could write us a script to encrypt/decrypt right out of Imatch it would probably
be of use to many users.

Hi Sinus
I agree with what you say and I'm happy with the way 'Protected Images' works.

My idea for 'Protected Folders' was from my use of 'IDImager' which is no more.

In IDImager there was an option to make a folder 'Private' and by doing this the folder wouldn't show in the Media and Folders list.

Mario

Lets see how many other users like your folder protection request.
It is also an alternative to work in the Category View most of the time, where you can effectively virtualize your entire collection, completely independent from physical files and folders.
