Export Settings for an Iphone 4

I'm curious what people suggest when using the export command in IMATCH5 to export a photo to the Iphone4? (DPI, width/height pixels, etc.)

In general, you'll get the best results by exporting to match the x-y resolution of the target device. A phone can re-size images to fit its screen, but it's more efficient to re-size on a computer (more horsepower, smaller files to transfer, etc.)

If you want to have the photos on your mobile device in the same order as in IMatch then you can set the file name of the exported files to something like {seq}-{n}.

Thanks for the replies!  I chose the 980x640 that Mario pointed me to in Wikipedia and it cut the size down to 98KB (great!).  However, the IMATCH5 Batch processor ended up creating a 980 x 541 image.  Any idea why the 640 got changed to 541?  Just curious.  Also, if I change the quality from 85 to 100 do you believe there is a noticeable difference on an Iphone4 since I am using 92DPI?

IMatch maintained the aspect ratio in the original file, avoiding to distort it.

Why don't you just make two versions and compare them on your iPhone? At these small resolutions and screens there should be no big difference.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I have a Samsung but was going to send files to someone who has a different phone.  I also made a mistake.  I meant to say 72DPI (not 92DPI).  Thanks for explaining about the aspect ratio.  I thought if I used the exact dimensions of the Iphone it would create a perfect match for Horizontal/Verticle. 

If I uncheck "Use cache image" will this affect the quality?

The batch processor will always respect the aspect ratio of the original file. Otherwise you would end up with distorted files which would be a shame, really.

What you want is a crop of the original file. If you nee to produce a specific width/height, open the file in your image editor and use the crop tool there to select the part of the image you want. This will also allow you to consider the specific screen DPI of the target device.

Need less to say that a pixel-perfect file which matches the screen DPI of the target device is usually not required. Even if you know the exact screen resolution of the iPhone you cannot tell if it does not reserve some pixels for a margin or toolbar, or if the application used to display the file will not re-process the image you sent. For smart phones it is usually not worth the troubles  When you send a file to your printer for publishing, now that's a different challenge.
